Retriever Temperament

Retrievers are a friendly group of breeds, making very good pets. They are not prone to being territorial or insecure, nor aggressive or destructive. Labrador Retrievers, for example enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, and are known to have a soft feel to the mouth. They love to chew objects, but can be trained not to. Their coat repels water, making this dog a great hunting dog, and they love playing in the water.

Retriever Sizes

Three sizes of Retrievers are currently distinguished.

The Male are 22 – 25 inches tall.

The Female are 21 – 24 inches tall.

Retriever Weight

The Standards: Females – 55-93 pounds; Males – 60-130 pounds.

Retriever Coat

Each retriever’s coat is different – Labrador Retriever coats are interwoven and waterproof. Golden Retriever coats are generally longer fur, but still water repellant and sleek.

Retriever Colors

The coats come in a variety of colors including: Black, Yellow and Chocolate.

Life Expectancy

As with most breeds of dogs, Retrievers will usually live for about 13 – 15 years, with exceptions in both directions.
